National Planning Commission (NPC) is planning to add 10 more projects to the list of national pride projects, though the government has not been able to complete any of the 21 projects within the deadline.
The planning commission is planning to add Prime Minister’s Agriculture Modernisation Project, Madan Bhandari Technical University and Sunkoshi Marin Diversion Multi-purpose Project in the list of national pride projects. Likewise, construction of Dodhara Chandani bridge, 410-MW Nalsing Gad Storage Project, 756-MW Tamor Storage Hydroelectric Project and Madan Bhandari Highway will also be included in the list.
The government has also recently added projects funded by US-backed Millennium Challenge Corporation-Nepal that will facilitate power transmission and road projects.
The government plans to add other mega projects under the list of national pride projects as a huge chunk of budget allocated to them are unspent. Despite multi-year contracts and also enough resources every fiscal year, the national pride projects have been a big disappointment. They neither have been complete them on time not could spend allocated budget.
The government has allocated over Rs 130 billion for the 21 national pride projects, but the outcome has been disappointing due to lower spending. Thus, planning commission wants to diversify the investment in other projects, according to the planning commission.
Among the national pride projects, Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower, Gautam Buddha International Airport and Pokhara Regional International Airport are performing satisfactorily and Upper Tamakoshi and Gautam Buddha International Airport will be completed within this fiscal year but the Pokhara Regional International Airport will be completed by next fiscal year. But the Melamchi Drinking Water Project might also be completed by next fiscal year.
Likewise, West Seti Hydropower, Budigandaki Hydropower, Nijgadh International Airport, Railway and Metro Development Project, North-South Kaligandaki Corridor, Pushpa Lal Mid-Hill Highway, Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track and President Chure Conservation Programme are the worst performrs, and
