Government seeks support from foreign missions

The government has sought support from the missions in Kathmandu to help make Visit Nepal Year 2020 (VNY2020), a success.
Addressing diplomats and heads of development partners today, tourism minister Yogesh Bhattarai requested to coordinate with the government to make Visit Nepal Year (VNY) 2020 campaign successful. The minister had summoned foreign mission chiefs at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) to discuss the ways to ensure success of the campaign, according to a press note issued by the ministry.
Bhattarai, on the occasion, requested the ambassadors to promote Nepal in their respective countries and help Nepal to achieve its target of hosting 2 million tourists in 2020. “As Christmas and New Year is nearing,” the minister said, requesting ambassadors to encourage citizens of their home country to celebrate both occasions in Nepal. “Nepal is preparing for the grand opening of VNY 2020 campaign on January 1.”
The government has already sent invitation to tourism ministers of 40 countries to attend the inaugural ceremony of the VNY2020 on January 1, he added.
The minister also informed that the tourism sector has currently contributed 3 per cent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and the ministry has targeted to increase it to 10 per cent. “The current per day expenditure per tourist is $44 but Nepal has aimed to raise the amount to $80.”
Likewise, the government has targeted to bring in 3.5 million tourists annually in the country within five years, the press note reads, adding that the government is announcing special packages for the airline companies to operate flights to and from Gautam Buddha International Airport.
