Nepal Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Unions (NEFSCUN) will organise the first summit of savings and credit cooperatives on February 11-12 to mark the International Year of Cooperatives 2012.
The union is organising the Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOS) Summit 2012 to explore new horizons in the Nepali cooperatives movement, said president of the umbrella organisation Minraj Kandel. “We will integrate saving and credit cooperatives, and explore new investment opportunities,” he said. According to him, the meeting will also urge the government to promulgate new laws to regularise saving and credit cooperatives.
About 10 papers on the Nepali cooperatives movement, their problems and prospects will be discussed at the SACCOS Summit 2012. “Nearly 400 delegates will actively participate in the summit,” he said.
NEFSCUN has about 1,100 member cooperatives in 40 districts covering a population of 750,000. However, there are more than 10,000 saving credit cooperatives in total.
