Nepal to celebrate 70 years of Mt Everest ascent

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary – for the first time – reached the top of the world on May 29, 1953. And it has been 70 years since the highest peak in the world Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) was scaled by humans.

Nepal is celebrating the seven decades of Sagarmatha ascent, in commemoration of the human feet on the top of the world. Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) confirmed that a platinum jubilee function celebration will be organised in a grand manner on May 29, 2023.

The government has formed a main organising committee under tourism secretary Suresh Adhikari. The committee includes representations from Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), NMA, Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN).

According to NMA, the committee has started working with a calendar to make the platinum jubilee celebration a grand event. The guests from various countries will be invited, the NMA informed, adding that all Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) climbers from across the world are being invited. They will also be honoured during an event ‘Everest Summit.’ 

A special programme is being organised at Khumjung of Solukhumbu on May 29, according to former chair and chief advisor of NMA Ang Chhiring Sherpa. “The programme is scheduled to be attended by Tenjing Norgey's son Jamling Tenjing Sherpa and Hillary's son Peter Hillary,” he said, adding that a separate programme will also be held in Kathmandu, after concluding the formal programme at Khumjung. “There will also a record-keeping competition among the climbers, including Kami Rita Sherpa, who has scaled Mt Everest for 26 times.”

The platinum jubilee celebrations is expected to send a new message across the world and give Nepal much needed promotion to lure more trekkers as the event will be covered by the international media.

Nepal is home to eight highest peaks of over 8,000-meter. Some 7,000 national and foreign climbers have reached the top of the world till date.

Training on digital marketing concludes

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has asked the tourism fraternity to remain strong and utilize this period for better future in Nepal’s tourism.
Addressing a live conference on Search Engine Optimisation and Digital Marketing in tourism industry organised by TAAN, here today, TAAN president Khum Bahadur Subedi requested tourism fraternity to remain strong and utilize this period for better future in Nepal’s tourism, though the COVID -19 pandemic is adversely affecting tourism industry.
Welcoming all the participants, Subedi said that the motive behind holding the online session during the period of lockdown is to facilitate tourism entrepreneurs by creating favourable environment to learn something new and productive. On the occasion, he also informed that news regarding 5000,000 bank guarantee required for registering trekking and travel company is untrue after he had spoke with concerned bodies.
A total of 96 participants from different member agencies of TAAN participated in the live session which was conducted by Founder of SEO Company in Nepal Prakash Khatiwada, SEO expert Prakash Humagain and Digital Marketing manager of SEO Company in Nepal Akash Karki.
The session started with introduction of SEO and its benefits in tourism industry. Khatiwada, on the occasion, briefly explained on page optimisation and benefits of organic SEO in tourism business. He also discussed upon components of SEO and on page SEO checklist.
Likewise, Humagain, on the other session, explaining importance of OFF page SEO, said that however after the control of Covid-19, there is high chance of getting boom market in tourism. Requesting to start practicing earlier to reach internationally through digital marketing, he suggested trekking companies to mention basic things needed to travel Nepal for example: vaccine must to be taken while visiting Nepal, visa process and insurance; so that the information in the website would be more educational. Furthermore, he explained about local SEO, email marketing, content marketing, social media marketing and optimisation.
Likewise, Karki explained the benefits of digital marketing through engaging the customers to uplift the tourism business. He also acknowledged TAAN for organising such productive session and assure member companies that their team is always ready to provide free counseling regarding SEO and digital marketing.

Tourism agencies announce discount offers

As the Visit Nepal Year 2020 (VNY2020) starts in two days, tourism agencies have announced discount offers to encourage foreigners to prolong their stay in Nepal and also visit frequently.
The VNY2020 being launched with formal programme on January 1 warrants attention and engagement of the people from diverse sectors for its grand success. Tourism ministers from 10 countries and special guests from various 40 countries will take part in the inaugural ceremony of the VNY2020.
Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) has decided to provide 30 per cent discount on its services, according to the first vice chair of HAN Binayak Shah.
There are some 2,000 hotels including the luxury star hotels affiliated to HAN, which can accommodate some 2.5 million guests.
Likewise, Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) is also launching promotional activities and providing 20 per cent discount on its service, whereas Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) is going to provide concession of 10 per cent to the service seekers. Similarly, Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATA) has offered 10 per cent discount on its services on the occasion of VNY2020. According to NATA president CN Pandey, the customers, who purchase tour packages through NATA-associated travel agencies shall be provided 10 per cent discount in its services. Similarly, Nepal Association of Rafting Agencies (NARA) president Ganga Prasad Nepal shared that NARA has announced 15 per cent discount for rafting and other water-related adventure sports to the foreign visitors on the occasion.
Likewise, Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is also going to announce some package for the tourists, whereas Homestay Association's president Keshav Badal informed that foreign guests choosing homestay will be offered up to 20 per cent discount on lodging and foods. There are more than 600 homestays being run in 57 districts and are associated with the association.
Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Nepal Chapter president Bidhutichand Thakur also informed that PATA Nepal Chapter is going to organise various promotional events targeting the VNY2020, one of which is Nepal, India, China Expo ('NICE' event) coming February.
Thamel Development Council is also going to organise various promotional events round the year in 2020.

TAAN seeks revision of TIMS card pact with tourism board

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is seeking to revise the agreement signed with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) regarding distribution of Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card and managing the amount collected from issuing the TIMS cards.
Issuing a white paper today, TAAN said that NTB has not released its share of amount from issuance of TIMS card. “Thus, TAAN is ready to revise the agreement, if needed,” the white paper reads, adding that some 30 per cent of the amount collected from TIMS goes to TAAN’s organisational account, while 30 per cent goes towards NTB’s organisational account. “Likewise, 30 per cent of the amount goes to the joint account of NTB and TAAN, while the remaining 10 per cent is deposited in the workers’ welfare fund.”
“But TAAN has not received the agreed amount for the last five years,” the white paper reads, adding that it has affected tasks like helicopter, medicine, administration expenditure and salary for staff, research and promotion of new destinations. “And the amount that TAAN is seeking from NTB is related to its share of money collected in the joint account of the organisations.”
TIMS was jointly implemented by NTB and TAAN according to the direction of Nepal government from January 1, 2008 to ensure the safety and security of trekkers and also to control illegal trekking operations,” according to the TAAN. “Since then, TAAN has been issuing TIMS cards to group trekkers (GT), while NTB distributes it to free individual trekkers (FIT).”
According to the white paper, TAAN’s demand has not been addressed despite frequent discussions with the concerned authorities. “The TAAN has not received its due share of the amount collected in the joint account since the last five years,” the white paper reads, adding that it has also adversely affected the administration expenses and wages of staffers working at the TIMS collection centre, along with the work of introducing and promoting new trekking routes.
Due to the tug of war between the NTB and TAAN on income from TIMS card, TAAN has also been not able to renew the organisation since past years. It has not been renewed for the last two fiscal years – fiscal year 2018-19 and fiscal year 2019-20. TAAN was last renewed in fiscal year 2017-18. “The auditing of TAAN and Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) is done collectively, showing TAAN's earning in millions according to the white paper.
AAN has been – citing the security issues of trekkers – demanding the government to stop distributing trekking permits to individual trekkers. It also showed concern over the country's inability to provide TIMS card through online system.
TAAN is working to provide 20 per cent off to foreign trekkers by its member companies on the occasion of Visit Nepal Year 2020, the white paper reads, adding that it will contribute in welcoming 800,000 tourists to the country during VNY 2020.

TAAN to introduce new trekking routes to promote VNY2020

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is preparing to introduce new trekking routes next month.
It is in the final phase of introducing new routes, claimed TAAN, which is conducting studies of five new trekking routes outside Kathmandu valley. “TAAN is planning to introduce new trekking routes with an aim to make the Visit Neal Year (VNY) 2020 campaign successful,” it adds. “The new routes will include places close to Annapurna region that have been neglected despite having the potential of good trekking routes for adventure-seeking tourists.”
The members of TAAN will also provide special discount packages on the new routes during VNY 2020. “The trekking agencies will provide 20 per cent to 30 per cent discount on trekking packages for trekkers booking trekking packages to new destinations,” it said, adding that the TAAN members will also provide 15 per cent discount to both foreign and domestic tourists on regular trekking packages.
According to the TAAN secretariat, around 40 per cent of tourists travelling to Nepal visit the country for trekking and a majority of them are from China and Japan. TAAN has also set a target to encourage 70 per cent of total tourists travelling to Nepal to go trekking in 2020. “Last year, TAAN had issued trekking permits to around 76,700 group trekkers, while Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) had issued trekking permits to a total of 20,685 individual trekkers.”

TAAN to provide skill training to tourism entrepreneurs

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) signed an agreement today with Manthali Municipality of Ramechhap district.
General secretary of TAAN Sarita Lama and mayor of Manthali Municipality Ramesh Kumar Basnet signed the agreement on providing hospitality and service training to tourism entrepreneurs of Ramechhap on behalf of their respective organisations.
As the government has decided to divert all flights of Lukla to Manthali airport from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), tourism entrepreneurs in Ramechhap are gearing up to develop the infrastructure in Manthali municipality.
“As entrepreneurs in Manthali have demanded skill-based training, we have decided to provide hospitality training here to improve the service quality,” Lama said, adding that it is an opportunity for all concerned to develop Manthali as a transit hub for tourists travelling to Lukla.
She also requested local tourism entrepreneurs to ensure quality service, security and convenient travel and said that TAAN is always ready to cooperate with local entrepreneurs. “TAAN expects this training to benefit local entrepreneurs by providing them with necessary skills and knowledge,” she added.
Likewise, mayor Basnet, on the occasion, said that Manthali has been considered as an alternative only, so the municipality is taking an initiative to develop it as a tourist destination for both domestic and international tourists.

TAAN to provide discount packages for VNY 2020

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) is preparing to offer a 15 per cent discount on trekking packages to tourists during the Visit Nepal Year (VNY) 2020.
A board meeting held today decided to write a letter to all the TAAN member agencies requesting to provide 15 per cent discount on trekking packages to both domestic and foreign tourists during the VNY 2020 campaign, according to, president of TAAN Khum Bahadur Subedi. “It has targeted to attract around 800,000 tourists for trekking in 2020,” he said, adding that generally, Nepal receives around 400,000 trekkers annually.”
According to TAAN around 70 per cent of tourists travelling to Nepal come for adventurous activities — trekking, mountaineering, and rafting, among others.
The letter will be forwarded to the member agencies from Wednesday.
Currently there are altogether 1,724 members in TAAN.
Meanwhile, Subedi also said that the private sector is all set to make VNY successful. However, the government has to be responsible towards the stakeholders.
In recent days, the trekking stakeholders, including guides and companies, have been complaining of random taxation system of the government. “The government must regulate the double taxation system imposed on tourism entrepreneurs, which is discouraging them,” he said, adding that the government has to focus on managing infrastructure, transportation, travel and other things for the convenient stay of tourists in Nepal.
Prior to this, Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) and Homestay Association had also announced they will provide 30 per cent and 20 per cent discount, respectively, to tourists during VNY 2020 campaign year.
The government had announced VNY 2020 campaign in 2018 targeting to bring in two million tourists.

Tourism Secretary commits to resolve problems in tourism sector

Tourism secretary promised to resolve the problems faced by the tourism sector.
During a meeting with a delegation of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), who paid a courtesy call on secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Kedar Bahadur Adhikari today at the latter’s office the secretary committed to working together with private sector to resolve burning issues in tourism industry.
Responding to the delegation, he said that implementation of single payment system can be operated through a systematic planning of permits. Adhikari also assured to carry out necessary actions for infrastructural development in Ramecchap.
The delegation led by TAAN president Khum Bahadur Subedi also handed over 9-point memorandum to the secretary Adhikari apprising the latter about existing problems faced by the tourism industry. The delegation pointed out the impractical imposition of expensive and double trekking permit fee as well as the need to make it mandatory to have at least two trekkers for trekking.
Stating the importance of TIMS in controlling illegal trekking operation, ensuring trekker’s safety and security and labor welfare, Subedi urged the secretary to take necessary initiations for effective implementation of TIMS and make guide and assistants compulsory for trekking above 3000m.
TAAN, on the occasion, also submitted a record of comments and negative experiences of tourists on Ramecchap–Lukla flight and requested with the secretary to facilitate a hassle-free travel for tourists on Ramecchap–Lukla route, while calling for a complete halt of Kathmandu- Lukla flights.

TAAN expects increase in flow of Chinese tourists after Xi’s visit

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) expects that the recent state visit of the Chinese president will play a significant role in increasing the flow of Chinese tourists into the country.
Issuing a press note today, TAAN welcomed the bilateral agreements signed between Nepal and China on various development projects and economic cooperation, including Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and tourism cooperation. “TAAN appreciates the remark made by President Xi Jinping about supporting Nepal in promoting Visit Nepal Year 2020 Campaign,” the press note reads, adding that the commitment of the Chinese government will positively impact the development of country’s tourism sector. “The visit is expected to increase the number of Chinese tourists as well as those from other parts of the world coming to Nepal.”
During the two-day state visit of Nepal, the Chinese President Xi Jinping committed to support Nepal to participate in the travel marts held in China. “China is willing to facilitate Nepal’s promotional activities in China.”
“Nepal is the first South Asian country to be designated an approved destination for Chinese tourists,” Xi wrote in an article published in Nepali papers.
The Chinese government has also committed to organise the ‘Ninth China Festival’ and the ‘Fourth Kathmandu Cultural Forum’ in Nepal.
As China is second largest tourism market for Nepal, the recent visit of President Xi will encourage more Chinese tourists to travel to Nepal, the TAAN press note further reads, adding that almost 70 per cent of Chinese tourists visit Nepal for trekking, hiking and other adventurous activities. “Since most of them come for trekking, the average length of stay of Chinese tourists is also comparatively longer than tourists coming from other countries.”
According to the Department of Immigration, a total of 153,602 Chinese tourists visited Nepal in 2018, while the country has received 106,050 visitors – of the total 782,600 tourists – from China in the first eight months of this year. “This is rise by 9.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.”
According to Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agencies (NATTA) chair CN Pandey, the visit by the head of the state of China, the major source market of Nepal’s tourism, will have a positive impact to the tourism sector. Likewise, Nepal was given the Approved Destination Status (ADS) by the northern neighbour in 2002 and in June of the same year, Chinese citizens began visiting Nepal officially for the first time as tourists. Nepal was the 18th nation to receive the status and first in South Asia.
The joint statement issued by Nepal and China on October 13 said that the Chinese side would support Nepal’s Visit 2020 campaign and welcomed the Nepali side to participate in the travel marts being held in China.
Nepal aims to attract 2 million foreign tourists in 2020, including 350,000 Chinese visitors.
The United Nations (UN) World Tourism Organisation (WTO) reported that China was the world’s largest outbound tourism market in terms of spending in 2018. Tourism spending rose by 8 per cent year-on-year to $277 billion.

TAAN suggests policy reforms

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has requested the government to reform policy to promote the tourism sector.
A delegation TAAN – while meeting with minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai at his office today – suggested immediate policy reform in the tourism sector.
The delegation led by TAAN president Khum Bahadur Subedi also handed over a memo to the minister.
President Subedi drew the attention of the minister to two foreign trekkers, who have gone missing in Rasuwa for the last 10 days and also requested for effective implementation of TIMS in all trekking areas. He urged to make trekking guide and porter mandatory for all trekkers and use government registered trekking company.
Similarly, TAAN general secretary Sarita Lama read out the suggestions provided by TAAN and asked the minister to advise Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) to issue TIMS card online. She further requested to implement Group TIMS effectively and abolish Individual (FIT) TIMS card as well as the practice of collecting Rs 1,500 collected by Sagarmatha National Park from guides.
The delegation strongly appealed with the minister to impose 5 per cent Tax on trekking and mountaineering sector, annul the VAT levied against the use of porter, mule and yak services and halt Kathmandu–Lukla flights completely in order to promote flight on Ramechhap–Lukla sector.
Minister Bhattrai, on the occasion, congratulating the newly elected executive committee of TAAN said that safety of tourist is the government’s utmost responsibility so taking a guide or a porter while trekking is essential to ensuring security of tourist. In order to resolve the problems faced by trekking entrepreneurs, minister Bhattarai assured to organise a joint meeting with the Tourism Ministry, Ministry of Forests and Environment, Department of Tourism, Inland Revenue Department, Nepal Tourism Board, TAAN and NMA.
The TAAN delegation comprised of senior vice-president Nabin Trital, general secretary Sarita Lama, secretary Damodar Dhakal, joint treasurer Surya Kumar Shrestha, executive members Simbir Ghale, Sanam Sherpa and Prem Bahadur Lama.

TAAN seeks Ramechhap airport upgradation

The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has urged the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) to upgrade Ramechhap airport as the tourist season has started.
A delegation of TAAN led by its president Khum Bahadur Subedi met with joint secretary at the ministry Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane today to discuss about the government’s decision to continue flights on the Ramechhap-Lukla sector. After operating flights smoothly in this spring season, CAAN has decided to give continuity to regular flights in the sector in the coming days.
Citing the need to create hassle-free travel for tourists on the Ramechhap-Lukla route, Subedi requested joint secretary Lamichhane to focus on developing the infrastructure of Manthali airport in Ramechhap and also sought complete a halt in the Kathmandu-Lukla flights.
The team has further requested the ministry to call a joint meeting between TAAN, Air Security and Authority Supervision Division, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Helicopter Association of Nepal (HAN), Airlines Operators’ Association of Nepal (AOAN), Ramechhap Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Nepal Association of Tours and Travel Agents (NATTA) to coordinate for the smooth operation of Ramechhap-Lukla flights, according to the TAAN secretariat.
According to the TAAN secretariat, unethical practices of airline companies of giving priority and preference to individual online bookings over those handled by trekking companies in Kathmandu should be stopped for the successful operation of Ramechhap-Lukla flights. “The government must discourage offering seats in Kathmandu-Lukla flights,” said senior vice-president of TAAN Nabin Trital.
Responding to the requests of TAAN, Lamichhane said that CAAN is currently working on the upgradation of Ramechhap airport. He further assured that along with the airport upgradation, the government will also ensure the security, accommodation and convenient travel of tourists.
Flights to Lukla were diverted from TIA to Manthali airport in Ramechhap since April 1 due to the renovation works of TIA runway as an alternative route till June 30. However, taking into consideration the convenience for passengers and public demand, CAAN had decided to allow airline companies to operate regular flights on the Ramechhap-Lukla route.
According to the CAAN, renovation of Manthali airport is underway and will be completed within this fiscal year, while remaining infrastructure will be renovated accordingly.

Langtang International Marathon on May 19

Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) is organising the third International Langtang Marathon on May 19.
TAAN has been organising the 42.195-km race from 2016 to boost tourism in the region that was left devastated after the earthquake of April 25, 2015. "The Langtang region holds a lot of tourism potentials but due to the earthquake and lack of promotion, we have not been able to take more tourists there,” said TAAN president Navaraj Dahal.
"The foreign runners will take part in Langtang marathon," he said, adding that it will help promote tourism in the region. "We are expecting at least 100 runners but not sure yet."
The race will begin from an altitude of 3,870 metres in Kyanjing Gompa at the Langtang National Park and end at Syaphrubeshi passing through Ghoda Tabela, Lama Hotel, Rimche, Sherpagaun, Kangjim, Bridhim and Ling Ling.
The top three finishers will get cash prizes of Rs 105,000; Rs 78, 750 and Rs 52, 500. In the first two editions, runners from Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club dominated the race.

TAAN organises bird watching training for trekking guides

A two-day 'Bird Watching Training for Trekking Guides' organised by Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) in association with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) concluded today.
The training was conducted by instructors from the Bird Conservation Nepal witnessed some theoretical classes at Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) Secretariat in Maligaun. The organisers also arranged birding tours in Taudaha of Kathmandu and Phulchowki hills of Lalitpur to give practical birding knowledge to the participants, according to a statement issued by TAAN.
TAAN general secretary Karna Bahadur Lama handed over certificate of participation to all the participants.
Speaking at the programme, Lama said that the training was a part of TAAN's initiatives to develop skilled workforce for the tourism industry. “We need quality workforce for quality tourism," he said, adding that the training is the institution's efforts to develop and promote quality tourism in the country.
Similarly, chief executive of BCN Narendra Man Babu Pradhan said that birding is a growing segment in Nepali tourism industry. “I am hopeful that this training, albeit short, will help to heighten your curiosity toward birding," he said, adding, "If you have passion, you can become a successful birding guide."
Likewise, an ecologist with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) Laxman Prasad Poudel said that he was hopeful that the training will encourage trekking guides to take birding seriously.
Coordinator of TAAN's Training and HR Department Shital Chandra Dharel, on the occasion, said that the training was TAAN's yet another initiative to enhance professionalism of trekking guides.
Earlier inaugurating the training, TAAN president Chandra Prasad Rijal requested the participants to make optimum use of the training for career development.
Similarly, NTB board member Krishna Kumar Aryal said that such trainings would help in promotion of quality tourism.

Trekking trails exploration, maintenance in TAAN priority

Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) has earmarked nearly Rs 100 million for exploration of new trekking trails, maintenance of existing trails and building infrastructure on major trails as well as promotion in domestic and international market.
The annual budget of the association for Fiscal Year 2016-17 presented by TAAN treasurer Lila Baldab Dahal has allocated Rs 8.79 million for development of infrastructure and maintenance as well as promotion of trekking trails.
According to Dahal, TAAN has maintained geographical balance while selecting trails for reconstruction, maintenance and infrastructure development. "We have selected trails starting from Kanchanjunga region in eastern Nepal to Api Himal in far-western Nepal," he said, adding that TAAN will build necessary infrastructure, build capacity of local so that they can cater to tourists, and produce promotional collaterals to promote the trails in national and international market," he added.
TAAN has selected 63 trails for maintenance, infrastructure development and promotion.
Similarly, it is investing Rs 9 million for exploration of new trekking trails. According to Dahal, TAAN is exploring Lamjung-Dudhpokhari, North Annapurna Base Camp trail from Lete, Sailung-Timal, Gaja Hill (Jogimara-Shaktikhor), Round Ramechhap, and Chatara-Mainamini trails in the current fiscal year.
"The trails have been selected as per the request of the local community and their tourism potentials," he added.
Similarly, TAAN plans to conduct mapping of Hillary Trail and Lower Solu in the current fiscal year.
The association has also allocated substantial funds for development programs. Tourism Memorial Park in Timal, setting up mobile washrooms in tourist bus parks, development of cycling trails, installation of solar street lights in Thamel, construction of bridge over Mardi Khola and Khaptad Development Program are some of the programs that TAAN is starting in the current fiscal year.
TAAN is also building weather information centers in major trekking areas, mountaineering school in Dhading, and porter shelters in Gorkha, and implementing trekking trail development program in Api Himal in far-western Nepal and Dhaulagiri Sanctuary, among others.
According to Dahal, TAAN is also building short trekking trails in the ridge of Kathmandu Valley. "To begin with, we will develop Thankot-Dahachowk-Ramkot-Sitapaila trail," he added.
TAAN has also kept development of a new trekking trail in Sankhuwasabha in priority. The trail starts from Amrang and passes through Lower Walung, Upper Walung, Ale Danda, Tashijongtar, Eyuwakhola and Mera Base Camp before ending at Makalu Base Camp. "We have allocated Rs 1.6 million for the project," added Dahal.
TAAN is also building porter shelters in Damodar Kunda, Larkya Pass, Kagmara BC and Lumbasumba trekking trails.
Similarly, it is investing substantial amount for tourism marketing and promotion in the international market. It has allocated Rs 2.4 million for US, Rs 640,000 for Russia, Rs 3.2 million for Russia, Rs 2 million for South Asia, Rs 800,000 each for Middle East and Australia and Rs 1.2 million for Asian markets.
The association has also set aside Rs 2.4 million to organize cycling competition on Lukla-Salleri-Patale-Okhaldhunga-Sindhuligadhi-Namobuddha-Dhulikhel route.
Similarly, it has earmarked Rs 1.2 million to promote 'Overland Route to Everest' (Kavre Namobuddha-Sindhuli-Sindhuligadi- Khotang Halesi-Okhaldhunga-Siddhicharan Park-Okhaldhunga-Salleri-Surke-Chaurikharka-Everest Base Camp)
TAAN has also announced a research fellowship of up to Rs 100,000 for firms, researchers interested to conduct study on issues/subject selected by it, a statement issued by the association on Tuesday states.

Tourism sector playing key role: PM

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the tourism sector has been playing a significant role in country’s economy.
Inaugurating the 38th annual general meeting (AGM) of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) in Kathmandu today, Dahal said the government was committed to helping the private sector develop and expand Nepal’s tourism industry.
Stating that agriculture, hydropower and tourism were important sectors for the Nepali economy, the premier said the government has put these sectors in priority.
On the occasion, Dahal handed over letters of appreciation to the top three member-companies of TAAN on the basis of issuance of TIMS cards – Himalayan Encounters, Royal Mountain Travel Nepal, and Highland Excursions.
Similarly, Dahal presented a photo-journalist at Xinhua Sunil Sharma and Mohan Prasad Mainali of Image Nepal, a travel magazine, cash prizes of Rs 10,000 each and letters of appreciation in recognition of their coverage of the Langtang-Gosainkunda Half Marathon that TAAN had organised earlier this year to disseminate the message that the Langtang-Gosaikunda region was safe for trekking.
Likewise, Dahal presented the TAAN Sagarmatha Adventure Tourism Journalism Award to Kedar Dahal of Karobar daily, and the TAAN Sagarmatha Pasang Lhamu Award to mountaineering instructor Pasang Lhamu Sherpa. The awards each carry a purse of Rs 25,000.
Speaking at the event, TAAN president Chandra Prasad Rijal said TAAN – as the largest tourism association of the country – has a greater role to play in the development of the entire tourism sector not just the adventure tourism sector.
Minister of State for Agricultural Development Radhika Tamang, Tourism Secretary Shankar Prasad Adhikari, and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) chief executive Deepak Raj Joshi, among others, were also present at the event.
Meanwhile, a closed-session held earlier today also approved the Annual Programme Report for fiscal year 2015-16, the Annual Programme and Activities for fiscal year 2016-17 presented by TAAN general secretary Karna Bahadur Lama, the Annual Financial Report for fiscal year 2015-16 and the Estimated Income and Expenditure for fiscal year 2016-17.
Similarly, it also approved Employees Bylaws and Financial Bylaws of the association.
Established in 1979, TAAN has been active in the promotion of the adventure tourism sector.

TAAN rescues 77 trekkers from Manang district

A team of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) rescued some 77 trekkers from different parts of Manang district today.
"Of the total rescued trekkers, some 17 were Israelis, 29 Nepali support staff, five Indonesians, 10 Germans, five Spanish, four Indians, three Canadians, two Russians, and two Polish, said the association that had deployed two choppers – AS 350 B3 and MI 17 – for rescue works.
Likewise, rescue workers have recovered 10 bodies from Phu and Kangla area of Manang district.
The association had sent rescue team from land route in the Mustang side of Thorang La Pass. The team brought down five bodies – two Nepalis, two Israelis and one Polish - today. Similarly, one more body has been brought down to Jomsom. They have not been identified yet.
With today's deceased, the total number of death toll in Mustang side has reached 10. Rescue teams had recovered four bodies yesterday.
Rescue team of Nepal Army has told us that there are eight bodies near Doomcamp below Thorong Pass, second vice president of TAAN Pokhara Chapter Hari Bhujel, said from Mustang. "We will bring them down tomorrow."
According to Mustang chief district officer Baburam Adhikari, 64 trekkers from different countries, including Nepali support staff, were rescued from Mustang yesterday.
The association's executive members Ang Pemba Sherpa and Pasang Tendi Sherpa were in the rescue team, whereas TAAN president Ramesh Prasad Dhamala oversaw rescue works in Manang.
Coordinator of TAAN’s Rescue Department Keshav Pandey coordinated the rescue works from Pokhara. Likewise, first vice president Kami Rinji Sherpa, general secretary Sagar Pandey and treasurer Gopal Babu Shrestha were at TAAN Secretariat to coordinate the rescue works, while executive member Vidya Hirachan was at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to facilitate the operation.

Newly elected CA members stress tourism

Newly elected Constituent Assembly (CA) members vowed to promote tourism for the economic development of the country.

Nepali Congress CA elect member from Lalitpur-3 Madan Bahadur Amatya said that they would prioritise tourism promotion.

Likewise, another newly elected CA member from Bhaktapur-2, Rameshwor Dhungel said that tourism, agriculture and energy are key sectors the government should focus on. "The country cannot develop economically, unless the government concentrates on tourism," he said, stressing on the development of the ‘homestay'.

During a programme organised here today by Hotel Association-Nepal (HAN),  Restaurant and Bar Association of Nepal (Reban), Tourist Guild Association of Nepal (TGA Nepal), Nepal Association of Travel and Tour Agents (Natta), PATA Nepal Chapter, Nepal Association of Tour Operators (Nato), Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (Taan), Nepal Association of Rafting Agents (Nara), Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) and Society of Travel and Tour Operators Nepal (Sotto Nepal) to feleicitate 15 newly elected CA members from Kathmandu Valley, president of HAN Shyam Sundar Lal Kakshapati said that the tourism sector contributes to around 2.4 per cent to the total gross domestic product (GDP) but the government is yet to give a serious re look to it.

"The government has, though prioritised tourism industry, it has not been able to help bring any positive development to the sector," he said, adding that the government has even failed to buy a new aircraft for the national flag carrier and construct an alternate regional international airport.

He also urged the government to work together with the private sector for the development of tourism. "The country can earn foreign currency, create employment opportunities, control poverty, promote exports and make regional balance and maintain surplus Balance of Profit (BoP) through tourism promotion," he added.

General Secretary of the Nepali Congress and newly elected CA member from Kathmandu-1 Prakash Man Singh, on the occasion, said that absence of local representatives has also hit the development at the local level that has caused negative impact on the tourism sector. "Dirty roadways, poor drainage system and drinking water have contributed to send a negative message of Kathmandu as an ugly city," he said, urging the private sector to come up with development agendas for the development of tourism sector.

Tourists will get shuttle transportation service on CA election day

Tourists will not face any difficulty on the Constituent Assembly (CA) election day on November 19, when the government has prohibited vehicular movements to ensure free and fair election.

"Tourists will get shuttle transportation service from hotel to Airport and vice versa," said the Trekking Agencies Associations of Nepal (TAAN) that has also been coordinating – apart from Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) – for the vehicles for tourist in coordination with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Chief District Officer and Election Commission.

The tourist vehicles will ply on three routes, it said, adding that the first route starts from Airport and moves through NAC, Newroad, Hotel Annapurna, Hotel Yak & Yeti, Thamel Chowk, Lainchour Chowk, Hotel Shanker Hotel, Ambassador and back to Airport.

Likewise, the second route also starts from Airport but goes through Gaushala, Shifal, Bhagawatibahal, Durbar Marg, Hotel Radisson, Hotel Shangrila, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Maharajganj Chowk, Hyatt Regency, Chabahil Chowk, Hotel Dwarika and back to Airport.

The third route includes Airport, Tinkune Chowk, Hotel Everest, Maitighar Chowk, Hotel Himalaya, St Xavier’s School, Hotel Soaltee, Hotel Grand and back to Airport.

The Tourist Police will also provide security, if necessary, the TAAN added.

Though the government has announced national holidays on November 17-20, the vehicular movement is prohibited on November 19 – the CA election day – only.

Private sector to defy general strike

The private sector is planning to defy the 10-day general strike called by CPN-Maoist led 33-party alliance.
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has formed a committee led by senior vice president Bhaskar Raj Rajkarnikar to foil the bandh called from Monday.
The private sector representatives including executives of Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), Private and Boarding Schools Organisation Nepal (Pabson) and Higher Secondary Schools Association-Nepal have planned to open their institutions despite the CPN-Maoist led 33-party bandh call.
Likewise, speaking at an interaction, here in the valley today, vice president Pradeep Jung Pandey asked the political parties to find alternative to the bandh. "The political parties must shun violent activities that could affect the economy," he said, adding that the parties must commit not to call strike in future. "The people must stand up against such bandh."
Economist Chandra Mani Adhikari, on the occasion, also appealed the people to vote for the party that promises not to call bandh. "A day of bandh or general strike will cost the country Rs 3 billion," he said, asking the agitating parties to find alternative to general strike.
Likewise, senior economic adviser to the Finance Ministry Dr Chiranjivi Nepal also appealed the people to unite against the strikes that bleeds economy. "General strikes push the country backward," he said, adding that the business fraternity also must be united against the strike.
Meanwhile, addressing a programme organised by Kavre Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Banepa, FNCCI president Suraj Vaidya appealed the entrepreneurs to defy bandh.
Calling the people to defy the bandh, the government also announced compensation of Rs 25,000 for the damaged vehicles during the general strike.
