BIMSTEC meet in Dhaka by June end


A joint secretary level meeting of BIMSTEC is going to be held on June 27-28 in Dhaka to finalise necessary preparations to set up BIMSTEC Secretariat in Bangladesh.
Nepali delegation,
led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs joint secretary Arjun Bahadur Thapa in the meeting, comprise officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministry. “The meeting will discuss in detail the issues involving the establishment of BIMSTEC Secretariat,” Thapa said.
Though there has already been agreement to set up a secretariat in Bangladesh, the
Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) member countries are yet to settle issues including the matter concerning expenses for running the secretariat, staffing, pay and perks and facilities of the staffs and representation of member countries in the regional body.
Meanwhile, the BIMSTEC member countries have agreed on the name of former Sri Lankan ambassador to Nepal Sumith Nakandala, to head the BIMSTEC Secretariat for the first term.
