ADB assiatnce for waste water management

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing $80 million (almost Rs 7.57 billion) loan assistance for the implementation of the Kathmandu Valley Waste Water Management Project.
Joint secretary at the finance ministry Madhu Kumar Marasini and country director of Asian Development Bank, Nepal Resident Mission Kenichi Yokoyama, signed the agreement today, on behalf of their respective institutions.

According to a press release of Finance Ministry, the main objective of the project is to improve waste water management in the Kathmandu Valley that has been facing acute drinking water shortage. “The project is planning to maximise efficiency and effectiveness of current wastewater sector infrastructure and service provision provided or planned, to restore, establish, and extend waste water services in Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Ltd (KUKL) service areas to improve the quality of water in urban rivers, tributaries and ecosystems,” it added.
The project comprises three components; rehabilitation and expansion of sewerage network, modernisation and expansion of wastewater treatment plants and capacity building and support for operational and financial improvements, it said, expecting that the project will improve the wastewater service delivery, increase efficiency and improve the health of inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley.The Ministry of Urban Development will be the executing agency whereas Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Ltd and Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board (KVWSMB) will be the implementing agencies of the project.
The project is projected to be completed by December 31, 2018.
