Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has finally received permission to operate commercial flights to the northern neighbour.
The national flag carrier has finally received operating authorisation from the Chinese civil aviation authority to begin services to Guangzhou. Under the Foreign Commercial Air Transport Operators Operational Approval Rules (CCAR-129), the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) sent an official letter to NAC today allowing it to operate flights to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, according to the NAC.
Nepal Airlines had applied to Chinese authorities to fly the Kathmandu-Guangzhou route in 2015, but the national flag carrier failed to obtain permission because of a pending safety audit to gain access to Chinese airports. NAC was informed yesterday that CAAC had withdrawn its decision to conduct its safety audit, though CAAC had prevented NAC to operate flights to China citing air safety concerns raised by the European Union (EU). According to Nepal Airlines, Chinese authorities had asked a few questions regarding the operation manual before granting permission.
Though half a dozen Chinese carriers are flying to Kathmandu since long, Nepal Airlines will be the second Nepali airlines – after Himalaya Airlines – that is going to fly to China.
According to the national flag carrier, it is preparing to operate flights from the first week of February, though the date for the first flight to Guangzhou will be fixed soon. The NAC is planning to operate three flights a week to Guangzhou.
With the NAC flight, the government is planning to bring in more Chinese tourists to Nepal. According to the Department of Immigration (DoI), some 160,000 Chinese tourists visited Nepal in 2018, while a total of 134,281 Chinese tourists visited Nepal till October this year.
