The Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) will operate flights to Osaka in Japan only for two days a week – from next week – as the airlines failed to attract the passenger also due tooff-season.
The flight schedule has been amended and only two flights will be operated in a week for the time being, confirmed assistant spokespersons of the NAC Sulekh Mishra. He said that the number of flights to Osaka will be doubled during Dashain and Tihar festivals. “The NAC has already notified the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau about reduction of flights.”
The airlines need at least 70 per cent occupancy for the flights to break even but the airlines has not been able to have 50 per cent occupancy.
The national flag carrier has started its direct flight to Osaka from August 29 after 12 years. “But the NAC reduced the number of flights to Japan due to lack of passengers,” he said, adding that the government-owned airlines will fly only on Tuesdays and Saturdays on Osaka route. “The airlines has conducted only three flights since August 12.”
The NAC – operating flights to Osaka since 1994 – had canceled the flights to Osaka in 2007 due to lack of aircraft
However, the NAC had announced to operate three flights a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – to Japan from August 29. “The Thursday flights to Osaka International Airport will be halted,” he said, adding that the NAC has decided to reduce one flight a week as there are more passengers coming from Japan than those flying there from Nepal. “
The NAC that has been facing a financial crisis and not been able to pay back the debt had high hopes with the Japan flight. The national flag carrier has also offered a promotional airfare for flights to Osaka to attract passengers. Passengers flying to Japan can buy one-way ticket at Rs 36,999, while the charge for round-trip passengers has been set at Rs 72,814, including value added tax, according to the promotional scheme.
NAC is the only airline that operates direct flights to Japan from Kathmandu. Other airlines like Thai Airways, Cathay Dragon, China Eastern, China Southern and Air China operate flights to Japan with transits in Bangkok, Hong Kong and different Chinese cities.
