The newly appointed
chairman of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) Sushil Ghimire today said that his
first priority will be to add new aircraft to regain trust on ailing national
flag carrier.
The corporation has a good market perspective and capable staff to expand its market, he said, during his welcome at the NAC office here today. He was appointed chairman of the NAC by the cabinet on Friday.
"The NAC need aircraft first," Ghimire said, adding that the corporation has, however, no fund to buy new aircraft. "Therefore, we have to plan to expand services in new sectors too."
He is going to bring change in policy and programmes to meet the challenges in the market, according to him. "The NAC needs to reform its organisational structure also to improve its performance."
The NAC has been trying to add one MA 60 and three Y12E aircraft with the help of soft loan from China. Similarly, the Chinese government has also agreed to provide one MA 60 and Y12E aircraft each on grant.
Earlier on November 25, the government had decided to buy the aircraft for the NAC.
Ghimire, on the occasion, also asked the employees and unions to cooperate to solve internal problems through talks.
Adding new planes, improving service quality and expanding service sectors are the key challenges to the national flag carrier, said general manager Madan Kharel, on the occasion. "The NAC doesn’t have a shortage of market to move ahead,” he said.
On the occasion, NAC employees and unions also asked the government to add fleet to revive the national flag carrier as it has been losing its market share due to lack of aircraft. The NAC has been operating two age-old Boeings 757 on international routes, whereas its competitors, the international airlines, have new aircraft on the same route.
Similarly, it has been operating five flights a day with two Twin Otters on the domestic sector.
