Worldwide
sales of mobile phones to end-users reached 419 million units in the second
quarter of 2012, a decline of 2.3 per cent from a year earlier, according to
Gartner, that delivers technology research to global technology business
leaders to make informed decisions on key initiatives.
Smartphone sales made up 36.7 per cent of total mobile device sales and grew by 42.7 per cent from a year earlier to 153.7 million. Samsung ranked top in worldwide mobile device sales with an estimated 90 million units sold and a market share of 21.6 per cent, an increase from 16.3 per cent a year earlier.
Similarly, Nokia came in second in mobile device sales with 83 million units sold and a market share of 19.9 per cent, a decrease from 22.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2011, it said, adding that Apple ranked third in overall mobile device sales with 28.9 million units sold and a market share of 6.9 per cent, an increase from 4.6 per cent a year earlier.
In the smartphone OS market, Android took the lead with an increase in market share from 43.4 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 to 64.1 per cent this year. Apple ranked second and saw a slight market share increase of 0.6 per cent year-over-year to 18.8 per cent, but was down by 3.7 per cent points quarter-on-quarter.
