Finance Ministry directs agencies to monitor gold import


Finance Ministry has directed concerned agencies to strictly monitor gold, liquor and tobacco, and revenue leakage. The ministry has ordered Tribhuwan International Airport, Tatopani Customs, police and local administration to closely monitor the import and distribution of gold to control revenue leakage.
“All agencies should be alert about the import and distribution of gold to see whether there are any irregularities,” it said in a press note. It has also asked the concerned bodies to follow media reports which state that traders are smuggling gold as they have not been buying gold from banks.
Similarly, it has directed the agencies to control the distribution of local liquor and manage the trade of tobacco products. “The sale of liquor and tobacco should be managed according to the prescribed laws,” it said.
The decisions were taken in a meeting of the Central Revenue Leakage Control Committee held under the leadership of caretaker finance minister Barshaman Pun. The meeting has decided to take action against any person or organisation obstructing in the drive to control revenue leakage. “Any person involved in revenue fraud and obstructing investigation will be punished,” it said.
High level officers from the police, Ministry of Home, officials of revenue related agencies including chief economic advisor Prof Dr Sriram Paudel and finance secretary Krishna Hari Baskota were present in the meeting.
The meeting decided to direct chief district officers to coordinate in anti-revenue leakage drive started by the Flying Squad, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force to provide support to the squad.
