Nepal receives $8.3m grant commitment under GEF

The government has got commitment of $8.3 million (around Rs 720.93 million) grant under the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
"Nepal has received commitment $2.7 million grant for biodiversity, $4 million grant for climate change and $1.6 million grant for land degradation," chief of Foreign Assistance Division under the Finance Ministry Lalshankar Ghimire briefed the GEF sixth constituency meeting of South Asia in Maldives.
"The grant will be used through Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Forest and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, he said, adding that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme and Asian Development Bank will facilitate the programmes.
Ghimire took part in the meeting with finance secretary Krishnahari Baskota, who represented the country.
South Asian countries — India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka — presented their progress report of the GEF supported projects during the meeting. The GEF established in 1991 has been providing support in biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, chemicals, internationals, sustainable forest management and ozen layer depletion. The global body has 182 member countries.
