Winter crops doing good

Winter crops, particularly wheat is doing well in Sindhuli district, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) office in Nepal.
Farmers in some of the village district committees (VDCs) like Bhadrakali cultivated wheat after 16 years and are fully satisfied with the crop that is almost matured, the report said, adding that in some of the VDCs like Pipalmadhi, farmers are cultivating wheat for the first time and are satisfied with their yield.
They have cultivated wheat in the bank of Bagmati river in the running water condition. This has convinced farmers including winter crops particularly wheat in their existing cropping system (Rice – Fallow – Maize) in these VDCs where ever there is irrigation facility.
Farmers can cultivate early variety of maize after harvesting wheat. Earlier, cultivating winter crops were not in practice.
However, this year as FAO provided seeds of wheat, lentils and vegetables the entire landscape looked green and appealing.
This year, the contribution of the agriculture sector is projected to be increased by 1.05 per cent due to good harvest.
However, the contribution of agriculture -- the largest contributor in the gross domestic product (GDP) -- has been decreasing in the recent years. It is expected to contribute 33.03 per cent to GDP in the current fiscal year, though it had contributed to 36.92 per cent in the fiscal year 2001-02.
